Our search and rescue information system helps save lives and minimise damage. It combines the experience of world coastguard agencies with BMT's expertise in marine environmental software systems.

Search and Rescue Information System

SARIS - the BMT search and rescue information system - is a search planning tool designed by coastguards for coastguards.

Knowledge of the likely search area in which targets may be found is key when planning a search and rescue (SAR) operation. Determining search areas can be challenging where prevailing Metocean conditions influence target trajectory. BMT SARIS is designed to operate anywhere in the world and uses in-built oceanographic datasets (based on state-of-the-art tidal and ocean current data) and charts.

It incorporates both search area determination (SAD) and search area coverage (SAC) and is widely used by coastguards, navies and port authorities worldwide

The SAD component predicts the movement of a target under the combined action of winds, tides and tidal currents.

Using the new Monte Carlo particle-based methodology, the system establishes the most probable search area, based on a range of probabilities, errors and statistical deviations. In addition, the existing three points models of datum point, datum line and backtrack SAR planning methodologies are still available. SARIS has in-built databases of configuration parameters for rapid model set-up.

Once search areas have been established, SARIS provides the user with a suite of SAC tools for configuring and deploying SAR units to search for the lost target(s). These advanced and easy- to- use graphical tools make it possible to quickly plan the most effective use of SAR resources.

These SAC tools include the search patterns:

  • Creeping line ahead
  • Parallel track
  • Expanding square
  • Sector search

With SARIS BMT can:

  • Save lives
  • Minimise damage to property
  • Achieve a  rapid response
  • Support the continuation of operational capabilities
