BMT supports expansion of Malaysia's Westports container terminal

Strategically located along the bustling Straits of Malacca, Westports is one of South East Asia’s most important ports and one of the most productive in the world. The port currently can handle 14 million twenty-foot equivalent units and plans to double its capacity by 2040.

When Westports Malaysia Sdn Bhd wanted to expand its container terminal facilities, they faced a veritable list of challenges. As well as undertaking significant construction in one of the busiest ports in the world, it was essential to minimise the impact on marine traffic and existing water flow patterns, reducing the risk of sedimentation, improving maritime safety and all with lower construction costs.

With such a daunting task ahead of them, they called on our decades of maritime experience and expertise to help them deliver the project. The essential services we’re providing include planning the development of the port, optimising the layout and providing conceptual design. We’re also giving desktop navigation simulations and a thorough quantitative marine traffic risk assessment to help make the project a reality.

Once completed, the expansion will increase the port’s container capacity from 14 million TEUs to 26 million TEUs per annum. The new container terminals will also allow the port to handle some of the world’s largest container ships, bringing greater efficiency and paving the way for significant further growth in the decades to come.
